Why do People Lie?

Excellent blog. The best I have ever seen on Sulekha or in the entire blogworld. You are extremely honest, eloquent, articulate, impeccable to say teh least. I see every sign of a great observer and a writer in you.

Why do I say all these things.  I don't know..

Arrival of Indian Cricket team in India

India losing to BDesh is NOT like losing against Alexander the Great. It is simply like India(n Military) losing to BD(Military).

The Grass is Greener

Everything is greener bcz it is viewed from far away.

Everyone longs for the place where they grew up. That is usually the time for fresh impressions, innocent friendships, and mostly pleasant memories as difficulties are hidden from the young people.

But, unfortunately, everyone also finds out their "old" place is no longer the same. No matter how much one realizes and knows about the changes, it is always a shock when experienced in person. My guess is you grew up in India. But, am sure the India you grew up is alive only in your memory.

Never go back to the same place again for it will erase the original importance of that place.

31 Rupees that changed my life

Hm...look like the conductor was the one who turned out to be a Saavugiraakki - meaning a customer of death (Saavukku = For Death; Giraaki = customer).

Everyone's life takes a massive turn with the simplest, unexpected, seemingly irrelvant action.  I never would have been in this country for a split second call from a woman - for good or bad.  But, my writing wont be as interesting as yours.

Yellamma .. My Kaveriyamma

Tha fact that you remembered her and wrote about her is a tribute to you and her. It is a reminder that wealth and good life cannot be taken for granted ,and one can contribute in their own way. Also, it  is great to see an old woman determined to survive on her own.

You may want to SERIOUSLY consider tracking her during your next trip. If you can find her, she will be happy see you and you will feel happy as well. But, time may be running out on you.

Survival of the fittest

Hm...who do we have here... Someone who really played cricket. TE Sriniivasan, yourself and VB are what I would call unfortunate legends.  Pleasing batsmanship but things just did not go very well.... for various reasons...

I think a lot depends on Uthappa, Yuvi, Sehwag, and Pathan.  If these dont click, that could unsettle the batting line up putting on an enormous pressure on the trimurthis.

We will see... Like Kamaraj would say "Aagattum Paarkalaam"

The Hotel's Receptionist

I am glad you are there to write the tiny details of a normal daily life. I observe many of the incidents that you note but will leave the writing to you, rather outsource the writing part to you......:)

Everytime I happen to yell at a voice at the other end of the phone.... I have made it a habit to add my routine bit... I know you have nothing to do with the problem but unfortunately I also dont have anyone to scream at the other end.. My apologies... by then I cool off and make the otehr side also feel a little better of the unfortunate situation.

It is sad that caste plays such an idiotic role in non-personal matters, usually to the detriment of unfortunate souls. There should be a psychology course in every degree teaching role reversal. Population in general has forgotten to understand someone's problem from the other side. If they did, even the Hotel owner will realize the woman is trying her best to manage a precarious condition at home.

Pen is mightier than the sword-True or false?

I was almost about to make some snide remarks... Then your last paragraph expressed my thoughts so precisely, it took all the fun out of my intention.  Your attitude and actions, and the current views reflect much of my past and present.

My observation is that the best way middle-class former beauracrats can do is to help "individuals" DIRECTLY in small ways. Big issues require big guns and big influences. With your experience you can do wonders on a small scale.  For example, tutoring poor students on accounts or in their CA exams...once a week or so. etc. etc..

But, you reflected the views and helplessness of the so many millions lost in the wilderness in today's world.

Pen might be mightier than the sword, but money is the mightiest of them all.

Love in our times…

Nice blog.... Way beyond my literary skills to critique...except to say it conveyed the emotions and the present day realities well. The casket and the 50 yr old woman confused me and how she is related.
